  1. I had to do something as someone else is getting dangerously close to 10th Dan.
  2. On the basis that all threads on here manage to drift, that would put all threads in one heading, and that would then make it no different to Facebook !
  3. If you look at them carefully, the make should be moulded into the rubber.
  4. On the GT6 and Vitesse, there is very little clearance between the chassis and the drain plug head, so a spanner is "always" required. For the Spitfire and Herald, you can use an 8 point (or double square) socket in a 1/2" or 3/8" breaker bar - works every time. For the GT6 I use a laser cut square end spanner that was designed specifically for the job, never failed. but could have done with having a longer / stronger handle (I bought it off Ebay, not seen them for sale recently)
  5. Be wary of Spitfire MKIII camshafts - also fitted to pre FH25000 MKIV spitfire engines, as they need the block to have camshaft bearings fitted. From Spitfire MKIV engine number FH25000 onwards, a detuned camshaft was fitted - probably similar to the Toledo spec one - and it didn't need to have camshaft bearings in the block. It IS possible to buy a Spitfire MKIII profile camshafts which have the bigger journals so you don't have to fit bearings in the block.
  6. Twin Stroms were NEVER factory fitted to any Spitfire. Some export ones had a single Strom. If twin carbs were fitted they were always SUs.
  7. Simple answer - YES - but only if you use the correct flux and get enough heat into it.
  8. Several postings deleted to try and calm things down a bit. Health and Safety wise, "good" employers err on the cautious side and always want to keep risks ALARP, it's much cheaper in the long run than having to pay out millions in damages because someone has inhaled too much welding fumes. I don't normally do much welding, but when I do (and I've actually done quite a bit in the last couple of weeks) I wear an FFP 3 respirator, and if I had an air fed mask I'd wear that. If you want a demonstration, just blow your nose after an "unmasked" welding session and see how much dirt comes out in the snot - if that isn't enough to make you wear a respirator, nothing will. Gas flow wise, I don't have a flow gauge, I just set the output pressure to give a flow that sounds right for the conditions, lower in the workshop and higher when outdoors on a windy day. Using a CO2/Argon mix makes a huge difference to the weld quality, having used Hobbyweld 5 & 15, I'm not going back to pure CO2.
  9. Calvin, Welcome back - you've got a lot of posting to do to get the Red shooting star 10th dan triumphero grade that Pete has !

  11. A very sad day. Rest In Peace Sir. Forum colours changed to black as a mark of respect
  12. Aidan, YOU were not prompted for you membership number when you logged in as YOU have already entered it in the past when YOU were first prompted for it. One only gets prompted once, and once entered one doesn't get prompted again. As explained at the start of the thread, we are trying to link the Forum with the main Club membership database so that we can create a TSSC members only area of the Forum (the Forum is open to anyone that joins the Forum - you don't have to be a member of the TSSC to be a member of the Forum). This project will take quite a while to get off the ground, but to make it work we need to know the membership number associated with a user name.
  13. The link looks legitimate - it links to a survey on an South African Academic website. The only thing I would be cautious about would be it wants your email address to send you details after you complete the survey - I would recommend using a disposable address such as from the likes of Mailcatch.com
  14. Nick, They were £75 more than 10 years ago (I bought several sets). The current Demon Tweeks price is £167 each, which starts to make the CV conversion attractive price wise.
  15. Trelleborg bought out Metalastic many years ago and still manufacture batches of genuine Rotoflex couplings. They are available from Bailey Morris as well as Demon Tweaks - and boy oh boy are they expensive now. The current priced from Demon Tweaks is £167 each. I've no idea how much they are from Bailey Morris, but about 10 years ago they were "only" about £75 each.
  16. The DVLA will no longer supply you with details of previous owners of your car - what they used to do was supply you copies of of all the formal documentation they had on the car, so all the V5's, RF60's, change of ownership slips etc, and these had the details of the previous owners on them, but in many cases the info was out of date and the previous owners had moved, and all it was was name and address and you could work out how long they owned the car. You can still request details of the Keeper of any vehicle if you have legal grounds to do so - such as being involved in an accident with it (see the DVLA website for all the reasons you can request) As for posting details on this forum, no one should post anything that they don't want in the public domain. When we first got going, it was open to anyone to read, and due to the way it was configured (not by me I might add) it also allowed Guests to post messages - something that spammers discovered and exploited - When I asked for the Guest posting ability to be switched off, the forum admin at the time (not me) got Invision to set the Form so you had to log in before you could see anything, and this inhibited search engines from indexing the forum (a side effect that we didnt really want). I have now setup each individual sub-section of the forum so that guests can read it (except the logged in members only section) but all sub-sections are set so that guests cannot post messages. This then enabled us to get the need to login before being able to view anything setting removed (something only Invision can configure) As far as posting the name of a previous owner of a vehicle, I do not believe that just a name could ever be considered to transgress GDPR - if you were to add their home address, then that is a different matter. Likewise, be careful posting telephone numbers, even your own.
  17. The ONLY thing that was changed on the Forum recently was the REMOVAL of the need to log in to view the Forum. There were no "style" changes.
  18. The forum has been opened up for guests to VIEW, this also enables search engines to index the site so when you search using your favourite search engine it should find the relevant postings on the Forum. There is also a new section on the forum "Signed In Member Discussions" that remains private to Forum members, i.e. guests and search engines cannot see it.
  19. Google is your friend here. https://m.delcity.net/images/linedrawings/Relay Diagram.pdf
  20. It is very unusual for a brake disc to actually warp. The overwhelming majority of reported warped discs are actually caused by heat soak changing the crystalline structure of the area of the (hot) disk where the brake is kept applied when the vehicle is stopped. It is something that race drivers are well aware of and need to be careful to avoid - after heavy braking to a stop (when the disc gets very hot), do not keep the brakes applied as the area clamped by the pads will undergo a crystalline change, which will then result in the symptom that is usually misinterpreted as warped discs. The fix is still the same - new disks are needed.
  21. I wonder how many Darwin Awards have been "awarded" by working on Petrol tanks ?
  22. Keith, Have you tested the timing light with another vehicle SINCE its not been working on the Herald. I have a Gunson 4123 Supastrobe timing light (big and very heavy duty), and the pickup on it failed when it was about a year old. A new pickup (under warranty) and it was good as new again - I've had it now for about 30 years, but not needed to use it for quite a while now as its quicker and easier to set the timing statically.
