  1. On my Vit (mk2) the front fixing for the rocker cover is an OEM fitted bolt rather than a stud and nut. I'm puzzled why the GT6 pics all have a stud and nyloc nut fitted. I understand that the clearance is tighter on GT6's, with Ali cover, but I still checked the bonnet clearance with a large blob of blutac on top of the Ali rocker cover on initial fit! Gav
  2. You've just reminded me how ugly the Panther Rio was. Rather have a Dolly Sprint any day!๐Ÿ˜†
  3. Hmm... I tried and failed to get the oil out of my Vit diff, after taking it for a run and using a large metal bodied syringe, designed to fill radar gearboxes. I tried several times to get a thin flexible tube down to the front end. It kept fouling the crown wheel. I'm going to drill the casing and fit a drain plug, like lots of people on here have done successfully. Gav
  4. Some people in the Trade refer to this poor quality chrome as " show chrome". I have an original new old stock overrider on one side and a modern repro on the other side. The chrome on the original has almost a blue tint whereas the modern one has a slightly brown tint. The difference is obvious when you look.

Don't forget that tyre technology has come on hugely. Early cars were fitted with cross ply tyres and lots of owners would drive on them until they were worn out, then wonder why they went backwards through a hedge!
  6. Iain, my convertible came with a rubber boot mat, which I believe was OE. I think saloons were the same. Suppliers supply a carpet alternative nowadays, as nobody makes the rubber mat made to fit. Gav
  7. Chris, Do you use silicon brake fluid? If you do ,I wouldn't bother going stainless. Silicon fluid is non hygroscopic ( doesn't absorb moisture) so piston corrosion is much less of an issue. I've used it for years and not had a siezed caliper yet. Gav
  8. How many years had your old battery done Ian? I replaced mine recently- it was at least 9 yrs old. I think infrequent use of most Classics now doesn't help, despite using a conditioner. With the price of batts now, I followed the forum advice and went for a slightly smaller but larger than OE batt and expect to replace it earlier. Saved a few quid. After all, I'm not trying to start her covered in frost in Jan! Gav

Many years ago going down to meet friends in Cornwall and running late. Entered a tight corner that continued to tighten up, panicked and broke the cardinal rule by slamming the brakes on. Vit ( dhc) went onto 2 wheels and continued like this for several yards, before slamming back down onto all 4 wheels. Needless to say I pulled over immediately ( no other motorist around) and sat there for several minutes to settle my heart rate. I then completed my journey at a more sedate speed.๐Ÿ˜ณ
  10. Corgi has done a nice job with the bonnet alignment. Looks better than a some of the 12" to 1ft scale cars....๐Ÿ˜‰ Gav
  11. That looks like a very neat job. When you say it needed narrowing, I presume you took a bit out of the overall width in the centre? Gav
  12. Is it a bonnet stay pivot on Spitfire or GT6?
  13. Johnny,I fitted my Girling servo into the existing gap next to the battery. I'm not keen on restricting access to the master cylinders, by mounting it over them. It just fits, but I think a Lockhead type would need the battery tray altering like Pete did. Gav
  14. You're lucky you can have a wander round a scrappy. No chance down here in Dorset! Let us know if you find anything suitable.
  15. Evening all. I'd like to fit a wind deflector to stop me getting a stiff neck on longer runs. I've seen the ridiculously expensive perpex type from a large supplier. I don't like it anyway, never mind the price. I'm wondering about a s/h MGF mesh item and modding it to fit, when required, but removable. Anyone tried an MGF one?
  16. On my Vit Mk 2 it has always been hooked into the side valance louvere. I
  17. Thanks Pete ๐Ÿ‘
  18. Just rx'd the Mintex Ceratec grease to fit Mintex 1144 pads. I've never used it before. Is it supposed to look like Gen Purpose Grease? Just want make sure I haven't bought fake stuff!๐Ÿคจ
  19. I think the first Lotus Elan used the Triumph column. Probably be twice the price if the word Lotus is mentioned!๐Ÿ˜„
  20. Paul, Google Laser Oil filter removal tool. I have one and it works very well in tight spaces. There are various copies available. Make sure you get the right size with the correct amount of flats to fit your filter make. The square hole in the centre takes a 3/8 socket drive. Gav
  21. Morning all. Thanks for the replies. I can confirm I have 16P imp calipers fitted to a 2L Mk 2. I'd previously seen mention of enlarging the pin holes, but not grinding a little off the backing plate before. I will proceed with caution! Gav
  22. Evening all, The existing front pads on my Vit are a bit thin now, so I thought I'd finally fit the Mintex 1144 pads that I bought just before lockdown. I got them from ebay, from a UK based motor sport company, after following advice on here as to which pad part no. to buy (MGB 633). There was plenty of advice, that the pad retaining pin holes would need easing out to suit the Girling 16P calipers, which I subsquently did and then put them on the shelf to fit later, believing they would go straight on. Well, time went on and I finally got round to the job today and hit a snag ! As you can see from the pics - the friction material is a different shape, but more importantly, the backing plate is a different shape and too big. The leading edge of the the backing plate is fouling the caliper carrier mounting bracket and stopping the pad retaining pins lining up with the holes in the caliper by a couple of mm. Grr.....๐Ÿ˜ก So - have I bought the wrong pads ? Gav
  23. Evening all. I'm nipping down to Euro car parts tomorrow to get an oil filter for my Vit with spin on adapter. I've seen Mann 714/2 mentioned here before as suitable, but to save time in the shop, what car make model year is it listed for? Thanks Gav
  24. One of the staff on Practical Classics had a problem with his TR6, despite being rebuilt very carefully by a reputable engine builder. The symptoms were the same - mayo etc. He even swapped the head and rebuilt again. Same problem occurred. In desperation, they stripped the engine, sump off and finally spotted a tiny hairline crack in the block water jacket.
