TRevver Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 Just changed the core plugs on 2L mk1 Vitesse. Did the job with loctite 574 to seal around the plugs but have a small weep from one of the plugs. Can't find Bars leak pellets anywhere - even on usual auction site they have to come from USA. Can anyone recommend the best product to plug the weep without damaging the rest of the system?
Colin Lindsay Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 Try letting the engine run for a while first; and keep topping up if required. One of mine leaked when first fitted but after idling the engine to full heat once or twice the leak stopped and has not returned.
DanMi Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 I,ve use k seal in the past with good results https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292672808446?epid=15031984468&hash=item4424a8a5fe:g:NSkAAOSwafJeRTMy&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4A87ozpsinrl96C7FPnb9mAdduoaFUoWRf2S8CgpshSqAsidEkskNrXDPSFXFuvukZtU7YP3sl5Pn9LcHD%2F2yRUDp%2BDJVnLOlP7K5hLQhWPm%2BER0eb6d9RngRbXdEHU6C1MOrBvEqpsStdCGraEhxbSxai%2FoONmbphHt5CYPABLFQrLSy1741l98Zf3U%2FQ1%2FL3ZmA1X%2FXGsrlYwTG3vmj%2FBSq188Eumb5z09BVTEoLSerjAJPjR9RfKFFrVP%2FJF4D6PlJc6aYhvs%2FhCPLwQ7%2FyH2%2FVlR%2BmTaIX9RKSvGruyR|tkp%3ABFBMts_r9_Zg

And halfords have a few similar products. I have always carried a pack of ce-lit, it is very good in my experience. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234288356661?epid=854387780&hash=item368cac9d35:g:BFwAAOSwVjNhkoo0&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAkKhjGYQha4eqCQUtTNrKyrxaQQ8RexKu8mX5dnoVyC4sm5oif91g3ddPM5%2BuiZdqzdy9gttmJTkW8AXc9jqMCgmALmbInAu6i87omQSf%2FnzgUZI6PYecPjGSwvVe0pxNeRuXHEKgdNsWogg7wDTm0tFW9C5%2BwX5yg2OSfDHipZcwKpTPVHvMVIinGkIFCV1%2B6A%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR77Jw473YA
TRevver Posted October 8, 2022 Author Report Posted October 8, 2022 Thanks. Good recommendations. The loctite 574 is more likely to be operator error than product failure! Never used the stuff before.
Piglet Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 K seal for me too. Seems permanent. Bars Leaks is more of a get you home kind of thing. Alex
DerekS Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 I'm with Clive, I always carry a pack of ce-it, makes a permanent repair. Derek. 1
Pete Lewis Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 ive said before after many tests we fitted a barrs pellet into every truck we made to solve seapage with so many hoses etc this was back in the 90s so things may have moved on since then but they do work and like most last the life of the coolant Pete
TRevver Posted October 9, 2022 Author Report Posted October 9, 2022 I’ll try the K Seal if the weep persists. I’m going to US with work in a while so I’ll see if I can get some Bars pellets, can you put them in beer to stop you peeing?
JohnD Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 If it were me, I'd disassemble, and refit the plug. Leak stoppers are chemical bodges! John 1

Chris A Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 The whole idea of putting something in the cooling system to block a leak sits uneasy with me. I'd be worried it would also block part of the cooling system. A paste applied on the outside of the system sounds better.
Wagger Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 I agree with JohnD. What was different with the fitment of that plug compared with the others? However, I have used Radweld for such things to buy time. In fact I towed my son's estate car up Detling hill with my 1972 BMW 2500. Top hose burst due to pressure building in the system. I used Radweld and had a replacement hose in the boot. Got both cars to sittingbourne where he lived, all downhill. I waited until the car had cooled down. Re-torqued the cylinder head and it never used any water for another two years. It stopped the heater working properly though. Sold the car to another fan who had a BMW 2800 for spares. I you continue to have problems, even if you change the plug again, then use something similar but I advise bypassing the heater. If you stop the leak, drain, refill with proper coolant and re connect the heater when sure that the leak is cured. We have hard water where I live and plumbing leaks on hot water systems here self seal after a few weeks. Taps seize though. Really need a water softener.

TRevver Posted October 10, 2022 Author Report Posted October 10, 2022 Button up trousers - same thing, terrible invention
JohnD Posted October 10, 2022 Report Posted October 10, 2022 That electric fence trope is an interesting one, because of fluid dynamics(!). Turn a tap on, slowly. The water comes out as a continuous stream but look further down. It breaks up into individual droplets! No contact between them! It's down to the surface tension of water, that tries to make the surface as small as pissible possible, which is as drops. The point at which this happens depends on the flow rate - after all, we have all seen a "drip" in hospital. The flow into the vein is seen in the chamber below the bag of fluid and is usually so slow that the drops can be counted, either by a nurse or a machine. 15 drops= millliliter. So, stand far enough back from the fence, and your stream will have dropleted before it hits, and there is no connection to your, er, terminal. Volunteers to prove this fact should form a queue. Colin Lindsay Posted October 10, 2022 Report Posted October 10, 2022 Man Gets Knocked Out After Peeing On Mont-Joli Airport Security Fence Search the Net / Youtube for the video of that one... it appears urine can stream at quite a rate (ahhhh... I remember it well) and the higher voltage of security fencing overcomes any dissipation...
PeteH Posted October 10, 2022 Report Posted October 10, 2022 There was a Tragic, and allegedy true, case back in the 50`s. Behind a factory was a small patch of grass which was regularly used as a Urinal. Over time the stink became so intense the windows could not be opened as it ofended the ladies in the office. Enter the "handyman" sheet of steel placed where it became a target, and one day became conected to the 240V mains. End result?, death of a "customer" and a "handyman" doing time at his majesty`s pleasure for Manslaughter. NO RCD`s back then, and no fuse in,the circuit either. Aparently not uncommon in very old factories?. What fusing there was often had been "uprated"!. I`ve Changed fuses on older ships and it was not uncommon to find 30amp fuse wire in a 5 amp circuit.
