  1. in the light of the 3D printing parts idea post and young Louis success in the trial manufacture of a small part for GT6 Spitfire door release mechanism we feel its now needs a list of smallish parts that are no longer obtainable so any bright spark ideas please post them on here for our perusal who knows where this will end up but you never know watch out Dragons den . Pete
  2. as apprentice way back i had a job starting our 1913 Commer simons fire engine, well the crank was up quite high and as a 18 yr old took some swinging over ,, the fitter trying to train me gave the advance a tweak and i flew over the showroom at speed and well off the ground, later i drove her around the factory she had the original commer 3 speed pre select gearbox you could hear the dogs engage form miles away , column gear change and a glass flow oil gauge...proper motoring. she still does london to brighton but dont know where she is homed now chrysler sold all the silver in the 70s.
  3. as there's no shop manager to sort these problems out now . its important for those who like to keep the all important file of whats been done history record. you need to talk to Bern, at HQ Pete
  4. That sounds more like selector rod problems take top cover off, will it let you select 2nd on a bench after thought you say when running so can you select 2nd engine off ??? if you can select 1st then 2nd is on the same fork and shaft but different selector interlock but running or not running changes the fault thats contradictive to selectors pete
  5. So Did early heralds have a starting handle I had a 59 948 but dont remember being able to crank it up But that was over 50 years ago pete
  6. I take it 1 3 4 and rev are all ok ??? there also a likely culprit in the selector shaft inhibitor there are balls and rods between the shafts that interlock the selector forks to only engage one gear at a time there could be a snag with these in that its not baulking , just unable to shift the 2nd fork if its baulks you normally get the whine from the ring if the selection goes hard , the interlocks in the top cover are worth investigating
  7. Without some searching thats makes two of us Ha
  8. Well that can be synchro or clutch related Does reverse engage without any nashing of teeth ??? First indication of clutch spin. the baulking is made by the baulk ring rocking 1/2 tooth oit of line while rotation speeds are differing The baulk continues till the speeds are 'synchronised' dog teeth angles play a big part of the operation if they are chimbled away you can crash durring a change or depending on the tooth chamfer baulk for ever May be the box been rebuilt and some muppet has used a ring with the wrong chamfer angle if you are sure the clutch is clearing ok then its box off and strip it down of you need any help or part let me know pete
  9. The starting handle nut would pre date before spitfire did the pennant have twin carbs ?? pete
  10. think you will find it routes through the harness tied to the lh side shield , enters cab near the fuse box , and bunch of bullets where the column harness breaks out just under the dash,
  11. does it baulk or crash during a change down Nick , a clutch that clears properly is first choice of problem when synchro tries to synchronise the drive is from the mainshaft rotation and to engage a gear without crashing or baulking it has to whiz the clutch disc up to a synchronised speed in the blink of an eye any drag will cause the change to baulk. after that is box out and check the condition on the syncro rings and dog teeth and hub sleeve chamfers , balls and springs or a trip with box to sunny luton Pete
  12. there are two depths of cap a shallow/short one wont seal against the filler seating and caps have two valves the big sprung one to open and let expansion out must compress when fitted to the filler and in the centre a smaller sprung disc to open and allow air back in semi sealed systems have an addition fibre or similar seal to seal the bayonet cap to the top of the filler , so on contraction the coolant gets sucked back of of the overflow bottle
  13. and they are off a fused Mauve wires for a change this also feeds the interior lamp so if thats not working the fuse is the common link Pete
  14. Ive always used club shop filters , never had a problem and as the engines have suffered drain back and survived 40+years its a bit late to worry now the anti drain flap, is a pretty crude device its never ever going to be utopia , it helps One answer is ......use the car more frequently
  15. Doug thays an interesting tune up theory Not applicable to most convertibles ha pete
  16. Blue white is main beam if you earth the earth terminal does the horn actually work work. The earth runs up the outer column harness to the sprung brush in the wheel is earthed via the inner column a wire which jumps the column UJ and the rack is earthed from the lubrication plug on top of the rack pinion hsg. pete
  17. Most fires are electric so a quick relaese battery terminal seems useful fire extiguisher is realy a standard bit of kit, dont get one too small many car fires start with brake fluid on the exhaust , it will burst into flames , water will extinguish so spare bottle of water coild prove useful petrol will not Ignite on the exhaust, it just evaporates someone else can explain why just rambling pete
