  1. Hag, My dash is the original and it has a recess around the ashtray; recess is rectangular and like an indented wedge (if that makes sense). Dick
  2. Could be that knackered engine mounts mean that once in gear, when you hear it, that the sump is connecting with the steering rack at least. Worth cjhecking the gearbox mounts as well given nothing there in neutral. Dick
  3. And so often put on in the wrong place!
  4. Near Side for RH drive, in UK that's the left and nearest the pavement. Dick
  5. My previous one did not survive long beyond the end of the Guarantee; an unusual occurrence with Aldi stuff. Dick
  6. Given the era of Flash Gordon and comics an 'Artistic' representation of a jet engine with intake to the nose and a red 'exhaust'?!
  7. And if it has not been used lately, which looks likely, be gently with it so it does not shear off. Dick
  8. Gully, and you are on this Forum?! Dick ps Cream's Disraeli Gears, and Fairport Convention formed.
  9. Busy in the garage with doors open and the A259 in Emsworth this afternoon had a tidy Herald 1200, pale green with 4 onboard go East and later West. Then a VERY shiny Red GT6 Mk3 go past West bound and a bit later a Maroon (I think, Ii was lying under the diff at the time) TR6 also West bound. Suns out, Spring has sprung me thinks. Dick
  10. That's not the one, this one http://www.simoncars.co.uk/commer/cob.html was the Rootes connection I had 'embedded'!
  11. And the big sign at the gate said 'Humber, Hillman, Commer, Cob' if i recall correctly. My Mum worked at the factory during WW2.
  12. Coventry born and bred with family deep in the car industry. My uncle worked at the 'Humber', as it was always called by the locals, and finally Jaguar on the shop floor from the end of WW2; he was also a Shop Steward during the industries troubled times. He was adamant that the demise was a complex mix of issues but that the management could not be blamed for it all and that he and his like had been a significant part of the problem. Add to that ill advised government intervention which saw manufacturing at Linwood, an area deeply entrenched in car production (not), and he used to laugh at the lorry loads of Imps being bough South to Ryton to be sorted. Dick
  13. It may/is tempting fate but the only time I seem to use the spares I carry is helping others either enroute or in Laon Historique or Classic Le Mans! Dick
  14. Wholly supported, just a pity the Forum regularly has comments about finding it 'cheaper' (eg than the Club shop) and the same culprit, sorry member, then moaning shortly thereafter about parts that were not quite fit for purpose. Grump over. Dick
  15. Did the same in my GT6, and they had not gritted beforehand. Always a treat to use the car in cold weather when it goes that much better, probably with the denser air, and cab stays cooler in a Mk1! Dick
  16. "No way Jose said Florence" (that's the clean, non-matelot version).
  17. Latest Aldi Catalogue showing a battery charger, also with a trickle charge function, on sale in store from this Thursday (11 Feb). https://www.aldi.co.uk/p/804759437763000?utm_source=digital_leaflet&utm_medium=leaflet&utm_campaign=gb_wk6_2021&utm_content=p28
  18. Pete, Cannot help on the roll bar issue but from memories of my TR4 43 years ago you are correct on the Surrey top fitting; it is a serious piece of kit and not just a clip on hard top. I had fabric rather than solid panel and never had an issue rain or shine. Dick
  19. If my memory serves me well my Lotus Europa utilised Spitfire uprights and trunnions; those bits did not fail and that was running from Rosyth Dockyard to London the weekends not at sea. At the rear the stub axles were courtesy of the Hillman Imp. LOTUS - Lots Of Trouble Usually expensive was frequently voiced by others. Dick
  20. Advert says in the text it is a Spitfire engine.
  21. Clive, reinforcing my point that at say £80 per hour then 2.5 days labour, fair looking at the workload, seems about right.
  22. Do not know what he charges but a weeks work at £40 per hour comes to ....., and some of those jobs mentioned take more time than first appear eg removing dash panels & clocks, brake issues etc as some of us well know. Dick
