Need to purchase an oil filter for my Vitesse mk2

The 1300 Herald filter should be the same as that for the 1300 Spitfire, same size and connection, unless you have an adaptor fitted to 'step up' the screw-in thread from 5/8 18 tpi to 3/4 16 tpi, in which case there's a much wider range of filters available. The adaptors are hard to find now, WIX made them under part number 24037 but those have long been unavailable. The original GFE150 are still about in various brands, but some of these are name only and the quality has suffered over the years.

If you're looking for an adaptor make sure it's a 'step-up' and not just the screw-in tube that enables you to use a female 'screw-on' filter with no threaded tube as opposed to the early male 'screw-in' filter which had the tube built-in.

No chance of a picture?. I suppose.

I`ve got brass stock and a lathe plus a full Tap and Die set if needed. I even reckon I could still "screw cut" even though it is about 40+years since I did?.

The original Herald insert (on left) was a simple straight pipe threaded to 5/8 18 tpi; it screwed into both filter and block and was very easy to throw it away with the filter!! (Done that)

The adaptor was stepped up to 3/4 around half way along, with a collar or nut to prevent it being screwed too far in. The modern filters that take this larger size are more readily available, and probably perform better.

Cheers Guys, I now have to find out if Jeff or another P-O has already done the upgrade. Looking at the Adaptors, It`s a quite simple job of turning/screwcutting, if I have to do it. I may even have a 55deg thread tool in my old box. The Thread guages are with the Micrometers. 👍

I have one of Clives adapters on my 1500 Herald and use Mann filters, doesn`t stop drain back though. I spin it over with no choke for a few seconds until the light goes out.

On my Vitesse with spin on filter housing I use Fram from a ford Escort, never had any start up rattles and excellent pressure.PH2964.

I just dont and wont get the paranoia about drain back

its done it for 50 years without any problems  you wont  stop drain back from the gallery or crank journals

all this is faffing around when the bog std does all it needs to for just a few £s

and how many read the service notes to say renew filter every other oil change and how many make the oil change mileages ????

happy new year    .....get a life  and drive  the smile      it time to worry about something real

Not paranoid about drain back Pete, as long as it`s got decent pressure it`s fine, went out in my Vitesse yesterday, then decided to take the heater apart to see why it`s cold, flap thing appears to do nothing, when I had the matrix out I could see the flap doesn`t move when the cable is in or out, more investigation under the dash required. Matrix is free flowing, can`t get it back together as the Smiths valve won`t seal on the matrix connection, new grommet required and I don`t have one.

The adapters the Clive used to sell were the WIX 24037 adapter.

They usually came from Rock Auto in the USA and cost about $5 each - but the postage to the UK was the killer.

It looks like WIX has discontinued them, so any that are left in the supply chain will probably sell for a premium.

2 sellers on Ebay at the moment, one at $60 each and the other at $21.20 each - and both of them probably wont post to the UK

Well it can't help to lose that filter fill-up first, with an anti-drain filter fitted... but on the Herald it's a system where only a percentage of the oil actually goes through the filter on circulating anyway so the rest of the system will be getting oil at the same time as the filter is filling. Oil change for the Herald was given as every 3000 miles.... not a lot these days! It's more of a worry with high-mileage cars where wear means that the original tolerances are long gone and the oil has more room to fill hence lower pressure, and you get the dry thump-thump-thump on startup.

Sadly I’ve probably only done 30 miles this year so looking forward 2034. 😆
