Period Photos of Triumphs

I would tend to favour a BCA site (British Car Auctions), But the Ford Corsair in the bottom of the photo, appears to have what may have been the original Orange Disabled Badge in the window. so I wonder if it is a recovered car compound?. My son`s both did Valeting work weekends in the 80`s,for BCA Camberley as teens, a lot of cars came in with personal stuff still in them. (And more!!)

Do you think the Vitesse/Herald offering could be TR4 Surrey Style ie removable top section, seeing the lid appears to overhang the rear window. Anyway its attractive and like Colin I'd definitely have one!

The TR4 offering alongside almost looks like a standard ST Surrey Top except the short near vertical fitting above the B Post, or is that just light/shadow.

it looks more European, possibly Geneva or Milan?

I would agree. Looking in close up at some of the photos where there is background text I found a couple the seem to be in Italian and one in German.

The top on the Triumph could have been a styling exercise to test reaction I suppose.

Add me to the list of interested parties . .

Agreed - I could see the Herald version being designed around the 'existing' rear glass from the TR4 Surrey Top as a 'styling exercise'. Maybe the Herald was parked next to the TR4 to show the design cues.

What we need is someone with a both a TR4 & a Herald CV to measure up to check feasibility!!

I've seen a couple of Herald/Vitesse hard tops with the rap-around rear screen over the years and missed out on one on ebay about 10 years ago. Not sure if it was exactly the same as the one pictured, but there is at least one other design out there other than the Honeybourne version.

TH Hardtop 1963.jpg

I edited this photo in photoshop, so that it was a tad clear for me old peepers, and as far as I can ascertain - the Herald looks to have also been fitted with a Surrey top, complete with removeable lid panel. I've never seen nor even heard of this before on a Herald but I like it.

The back light looks so very similar to the TR4 (which looks to be a standard offering) that it may even use the same glass. I'd hazard a guess that the backlight's frame is a modified version of the TR4 one ..mostly altered in it having a side panel B-post  The Herald's front corner of the cap rail, the detail of overlapping rear edge of the Surrey top lid, and the way the drip rail come back are all so similar to the design of TR4 surrey top.

I might only assume Standard Triumph exhibited it to see if there was a viable market for such a roof.  Certainly the back seat space would be airy with the wrap-around glass, but I'd guess it wouldn't be good for much of the Australian market - because scorching sun on back seat passenger's heads and neck is really very uncomfortable.  Here in the UK though I think it might have been very interesting ..but for the extra cost added onto a bottom-budget saloon car.

Still, should I buy another Herald or Vitesse then I'd certainly consider making one for myself.   Thanks for sharing this Chris.

I have a hard top with the rap around rear screen & sunroof for my Herald, but no idea who made it, needs a refurb, hopefully get it on next winter.

Did put it on ebay but no bids !

Do you have the screen for that one? It could be hard to replicate - seals you can source, but the actual glass is a lot harder. Might put a few bidders off!

Yes Colin I have the glass (Perspex) it needs new seals & catches, got the catches second hand off ebay listed as from an army generator cabinet.

Now we are moving house I will have the space to keep it, so quite glad it didn't sell back it the summer as it looks good on the car, gives it the coupe look.

Was going to order the seals but when  I measured the thickness of the fiberglass it ranges quite a few millimetres so its never going to be water tight without some work to get it even.

Being in Cornwall put buyers off, had a few ask if I could deliver it but all miles away, did offer local delivery.

Cheers, Steve.

I have an S&D (Smith and Deakin?) version hanging on my wall, always meant to use it on the Herald but it's hanging quite high up and impossible for one person to take down alone... however never tried fitting it, so no idea of how well it seals. I don't think it would ever be 100% waterproof!
