** ON TO THE NEXT BIT ** Nose to Tail - 1972 Spitfire MkIV restoration upgrades!!

Recommended Posts

Sadly the postage costs to Northern Ireland aren't the best value... in fact if I remember correctly, they don't! :(

I got ripped off badly two months ago in a local Autofactors; "Try This" they said, so I did.... standing at the head of the queue I swallowed slightly when I found it was £50... mine was the 20/50 version and I've since read varying reports about it on the Net. Too late, it's in the GT6 already...

Next time I went in I jokingly complained about it, and they sold me the Comma Oil instead at £14...

Andy-Yes the price is excellent direct from Classic but I am not desparate yet. Current oil has only done about 300miles so can afford to wait 'til 'black friday'. Every little helps, as they say. These days I just collect stuff that is not urgent in my fleabay basket and buy it when the special discount days come up. Would have saved £38 on the last promo weekend if the shocks hadn't been 'out of stock'.

Colin - I think its an absolute disgrace that you get stung for stupid carriage costs, that's if they will even deliver to you. What is the problem taking stuff across the water. I have even had things deivered from the USA carriage free an the Alantic is a little bigger.

Am currently being heavily stung for carriage costs by two suppliers, although the second phoned first to see if I was ok with their costs, and they were an excellent price in the first place so i was happy to go ahead. The other just blocked the order until I complied with an additional £20, and it still hasn't arrived a week later. For some reason suppliers seem to panic when they hear the 'Ireland' part and ignore the 'Northern / UK' bit, so frequently charge either International rates, or air freight charges. (the most famous being £21 postage for an £18 order....)

eBay sellers seem to be able to do free postage on most things I buy, and you'd be surprised at the size of some of the articles I've bought, but some professional parts suppliers seem to charge high, higher, or exorbitant. The attitude seems to be: if you deal with us, you pay OUR rates, not the going rates. I'd grin and bear it, but others seem to be able to despatch parcels for a fraction of the price, and if only they had the bits I need I'd stick with them for everything.

The part I was waiting on arrived today by UPS ; 4kg in total and cost me £20 approx to receive it - according to the bumf on the website it's marked as "up to 20kg". I had to add more parts to the same half-empty box, which brought it up to 8kg, and forward it on to another party, so contacted DPD with the weight and the size and they've charged me £12.99.

You get the impression that some suppliers don't care; it's not their money they're wasting on carriage costs.

It is an old trick i agree, but cost of packing materials such as quality packing tape or box's or bags all come into the equation.  The simple rule i have with fleabay.... If the postage is excessive dont buy..... Or ask for a reduction if you think they have got it wrong, as Fleabay have a postal estimator tool and some people just use that..... And it comes up with stupid prices. Also paypal and Fleabay charge you commision on postage, so if you send a parcel that would cost £2-90p They will want their cut as well.

It all comes down to where businesses look to recover the costs of the person doing the posting and packing - as part of the P&P, or the overhead / margin on the goods. That's the main reason for it varying widely. A private seller isn't going to charge their time, whereas a business will somewhere in the transaction / purchase cost.

Sadly with some parts seemingly only available from one supplier, there's no other choice.

I don't think they make a profit on the carriage; I just think they don't care if it's cost-effective to the customer or not as long as it suits them.

I did visit the premises of this particular company once in passing and I reckon I'd rather deal by mail order. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally ordered some Classic Oil on the recent ebay 10% off day. Hoping it will arrive as the two orders that I have placed for KYB shock absorbers have been cancelled due to 'no stock'. As KYBs appear to be in short supply what is the next best, reasonably priced brand? I have read various posting here about modern Monroes not being as good as old stock, but Koni, Spax etc are both over spec and over budjet for my needs. Any thoughts folks?

Sadly I don't think there are any decent normal shocks made any more. So either the cheap and just about work ones, or adjustables. A sad state of affairs.

eBay or trawling the NOS specialists is your best bet. If you start a thread asking about suppliers at the Stonehenge show somebody may be able to point you in the right direction. But be warned, I nearly bought a set of shocks from one ( dolomite rears) and insisted I check inside the box. Sadly the separate spring seats were not correct for the shocks, so unusable (the seller tried to tell me my old ones would fit, but that is very unlikely)

I am now starting work on my 'back to bare metal' respray after a long chat with a restorer. I have been advised to get my supplies from Brighton Autopaints. Does anyone know if they are part of the Autopaint franchise, as I have a local branch nearby, although BA do offer free delivery over £100. Also is there anyway of getting a colour sample of carmine and signal red, before I order. I know about the problems of viewing colours on a computer monitor, even a colour profiled one, and would like to see the colours in the flesh, so to speak. There don't appear to be any cars in the Manchester area in these shades. Do the club do a 'colour card'?

I just got some paint from Brighton Autopaints. 5 minute drive from my house!I don't think they are part of the franchise.

I get my paint for resprays etc from Jawel paints. Their 2k paint that is "mixed to code" seems very good, and their pre-mixed paints are a bit thinner but again last well. My Toledo was done is Post Office red 3 years ago as a quick tidy-up and seems to be lasting well, no fading. But in general get what the painter wants, or better still let them buy it so if anything goes wrong it is down to them.

Not sure why the painter thinks they are so good, they just sell a variety of paints like anybody else, and the same brands. However, they have a very good reputation for colour matching.

Regarding the actual colours, google images gives a decent comparison, though pictures are always difficult to see the exact colour. But gives you the idea. Signal is the bright, very red, red. Carmine is a little more subtle, and deeper colour. I (personally) think carmine does not work so well on early cars.

Is Nantwich to far for you to travel? I have a couple of mates with a Carmine red Stag and a bright red gt6 that you can look at in the flesh so to speak. I can send you pics of both before hand.

BW,

I think you've answered your own question, you godda go see 'em!  But bare in mind these colours fade, I had my Mimosa yellow GT6 re-sprayed, the guy phoned me up in a panic telling me I'd told him the wrong colour. It had faded from bright Mimosa yellow to dull post-it-note yellow, he couldn't believe the difference 20 years of sunlight had made.

Tony. It's not only down to the monitor but also the camera/scanner and also the colour of the light (time of day, flash etc) the photo was taken with. This is why a colour 'let in' can look great in the garage, but a total mis-match in daylight. Morning daylight is bluish, evening redish. Also the reflectance of the paint adds more variance into the mix!

I think the carmine is a little too deep for what I have in mind. Thanks.

Doug. Thanks for the warning. I currently have several shades of pimento on the car, all from the same paint can, applied over over several years. Even t-cut, brasso etc etc, won't pull them back to any sort of match. Part of it is flaking (see earlier pictures of the bonnet), some 'deadened' with a petrol spill,  most of it now very poor.
